Three Ellisville restaurants close permanently, but a new restaurant will replace an old location.
ELLISVILLE, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) Three Ellisville restaurants have recently closed permanently.  As we have covered previously, the restaurant industry has been one of the hardest-hit industries during the pandemic lockdown, which has changed our social structure.

Permanently closed:

- Alibi Sports Bar
- IHOP
- PM BBQ

While PM BBQ is a local favorite among the list, another restaurant is already reconfiguring the facility to open by the end of September.  J. Smugs GastroPit West will be a locally-owned bar and grill that will engage the community and community events.  More information about this restaurant will be published in a few days as we learn more.

Brick Oven and Buckhead Grill close permanently.
ST LOUIS, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) In the past week, multiple restaurants have closed or reduced hours due to staff shortage.  The reason for these two closures has not been verified. Still, it is safe to assume they closed for the same reasons that many restauranteurs are becoming increasingly overwhelmed by escalating costs and staff shortages.

Known restaurant closures:

- Brick Oven - St. Peters, MO
- Buckhead Grill - Chesterfield, MO

We have announced the restaurants we know that have closed.  We are certain there are more that closed and more to close in the near future.

It is more important than ever for restaurant owners to know their operating costs to avoid operating in a negative profit margin.  Additionally, owners need to manage hours not to overwork existing staff, creating burnout because replacing staff has become a huge challenge.

The city of Chicago has filed two lawsuits against DoorDash and Grubhub for deceiving customers.
CHICAGO, IL (StLouisRestaurantReview) CNBC reported on August 27, 2021, that the city of Chicago had filed lawsuits against two major restaurant online ordering and delivery providers, DoorDash and Grubhub.  As reported, the lawsuits allege that companies are deceiving customers and using unfair business practices.

It is a lawsuit, and allegations are not proof that the companies are guilty of these crimes. However, the companies will respond and state that they look forward to responding in court and are certain they will prevail.

The responses are normal boilerplate responses, but the truth of the matter is that it is too early to know who will prevail, and the city of Chicago certain feels just as confident in their decision to sue.

ROCK HILL, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) Tried to eat at St. Louis WING Co. today but found this disturbing sign on the door.  Closed for business after 10 years of business.  They were located at 9816 Manchester Rd. in Rock Hill, MO.

After searching online we found that Sauce Magazine reported the information yesterday, Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

Recently, J Greens Pub, located down the street in Rock Hill on Manchester Road, closed as well.  The reason is unknown, but it's no secret that restaurants are suffering from escalating costs, low staffing, and slow sales due to COVID.

It has been estimated that 10-12% of the restaurants across the country have closed, and it is reasonable to expect that number to climb higher before this political and economic dilemma is over.

Earlier this week, we published an article titled "Restaurant Industry in Danger of Being Wiped Out," whereby the National Restaurant Association reported they submitted a letter to Congressional leadership, sharing concerning new consumer confidence survey findings and urging swift replenishment of the Restaurant Revitalization Fund.  CLICK to view a copy of the letter.

Just in time for NFL Kickoff, Pizza Hut is bringing back its fan-favorite Detroit-Style pizza - now available to customize with up to five toppings
PLANO, TX (StLouisRestaurantReview) Detroit-Style pizza is BACK at Pizza Hut for a limited time.  Beginning yesterday, Hut Rewards® members get early access to indulge in its cravable, caramelized-crust, glory - one day before all pizza lovers can sink their teeth into this fan-favorite starting August 25 - and now with the option to create your own personal recipe with up to five topping combinations.

The recipe that took more than a year and 500+ iterations to develop, was in such high demand when it debuted in early 2021 that it sold out two weeks earlier than projected nationally.  In addition to creating an unprecedented spike in web searches across the country for Detroit-Style—reaching peak popularity after launch, based on Google Trends data—Pizza Hut's latest innovation also stirred up huge demand in the Detroit area that was double the national average.  The launch ultimately led to Pizza Hut's best quarterly sales results in 10 years.

Pizza Hut Detroit-Style pizza celebrates all the beloved elements of a true Detroit-style pizza.  Each pizza is rectangular-shaped, served up with cheese all the way to the edge creating a caramelized crust, loaded with toppings, and topped with a premium vine-ripened tomato sauce.

To make this new menu item truly unique, Pizza Hut incorporated its own take on a few elements – such as the tomato sauce that tops the pizza – which it tested eight different versions of before finding the perfect taste.

"Detroit-Style was a hit from the moment it launched," said David Graves, General Manager, Pizza Hut.  "Once it sold out, our customers have been asking for it back.  This is actually the fastest we've brought back a pizza in over 10 years."

Detroit-Style pizza will be available exclusively for Hut Rewards members one-day early beginning August 24 and all pizza lovers can get their hands on a thick, square slice starting August 25.  For the first time, customers now have a 'Create Your Own' option available, to customize their Detroit-Style pizza with up to any five of their favorite toppings.  For those who enjoyed the original offerings, three bold handcrafted recipes are back, including:

- Double Pepperoni: Twice the zest, complete with 32 slices of regular pepperoni and 48 slices of the signature Pizza Hut Crispy Cupped Pepperoni
- Meaty Deluxe: Loaded with bacon, Italian sausage, and Crispy Cupped Pepperoni
- Supremo: Topped with Italian sausage, red onions, and green bell peppers

Pizza Hut Detroit-Style pizza is available now at locations nationwide for contactless delivery, carryout, curbside pickup, or the recently introduced digital order pick-up window, The Hut Lane™.  In April 2020, Pizza Hut expanded its contactless offerings and became the first national pizza brand to make it easy to select contactless curbside for online orders.

Association Letter to Congressional Leadership urges adequate funds to replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund
WASHINGTON, DC (StLouisRestaurantReview) The National Restaurant Association released the following information today:

National Restaurant Association and its state restaurant association partners sent a letter to Congressional leadership, sharing concerning new consumer confidence survey findings and urging swift replenishment of the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF).

The survey found that a majority of consumers have already changed their dining behavior, which is beginning to put acute pressure back on the restaurant industry.  This faltering consumer confidence comes on top of food and labor costs that are increasing at their fastest pace in several years, continued indoor capacity limits in 11 states, and crushing long-term debt loads for countless restaurant owners.

Specifically, the survey found:

- 6 in 10 adults changed their restaurant use due to the rise in the delta variant.
- 19% of adults have stopped going out to restaurants,
- 9% have canceled existing plans to go out to a restaurant in recent weeks.
- 37% have ordered takeout or delivery instead of going out to a restaurant,
- 19% have chosen to sit outside instead of inside when going out to a restaurant.

"For an industry that requires a 'full house' every evening to make a profit, this is a dangerous trend," said Sean Kennedy, executive vice president of Public Affairs for the National Restaurant Association.  "These changes indicate declining consumer confidence that will make it more difficult for most restaurant owners to maintain their delicate financial stability."

The letter urges Congress to complete the mission of the RRF and provide adequate funds to replenish the program and offer relief for the applications still pending.

"The rise of coronavirus variants like delta threaten to push these restaurants closer to permanently closing their doors," added Kennedy.  The RRF has proven its effectiveness in every state, saving restaurants, workers, and the suppliers who depend on their business.  The small gains that our industry has made toward financial security are in danger of being wiped out, dashing the hopes of communities, entrepreneurs, and consumers nationwide."

177,000 RRF applications that totaled $43.6 billion in grants are still pending.

While the first half of 2021 showed positive gains for the industry, there is still a long road ahead, especially for full-service restaurants facing the greatest threat from new government restrictions in response to the delta variant.
