KFC Calls On Competitors To Halt The Chicken Sandwich Wars For One Day Only To Fight A Bigger Enemy: Hunger
KFC is donating $1 from each KFC Chicken Sandwich sold on Giving Tuesday to fight hunger
LOUISVILLE, KY (StLouisRestaurantReview) Yesterday, KFC is calling on all worthy chicken sandwich purveyors to put their differences aside in the name of fighting hunger.  On Giving Tuesday (November 30), KFC will donate $1 for each KFC Chicken Sandwich sold* (including KFC Chicken Sandwich meals) to Blessings in a Backpack to provide weekend meals to children who might otherwise go hungry.  The organization was selected as the donation recipient by KFC restaurant team members.

In addition to the donation to Blessings in a Backpack, KFC is challenging its competitors in the chicken sandwich game to put down their arms – er, wings –and join forces to donate to a deserving non-profit organization of their choice to fight hunger.  Or they can stop by their local KFC and grab a KFC Chicken Sandwich, and we'll donate for them.

The KFC Chicken Sandwich – dubbed its best sandwich ever – was introduced nationwide earlier this year and quickly became fan favorite featuring a double-breaded, Extra Crispy chicken breast filet, buttery brioche bun, thick pickles, and the perfect amount of the Colonel's real mayo or spicy sauce.

On Giving Tuesday, get your favorite KFC Chicken Sandwich – in classic or spicy – by visiting your local KFC restaurant or ordering ahead for delivery or Quick Pick-Up on the KFC app or at KFC.com.  Then, show your support by sharing on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook using the hashtag #ChickenSandwichForGood.

KFC has partnered with Blessings in a Backpack since 2017. Employees at KFC's Louisville, Ky.-based headquarters volunteer weekly to provide and physically package up meals for more than 350 local students to take home for the weekend.  At the height of the pandemic, KFC also donated $400,000 to Blessings in a Backpack to feed children unable to receive school meals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  During the 2020-2021 school year, Blessings in a Backpack distributed 2.2 million bags of ready-to-eat food to children at more than 1,090 schools in the U.S.

KFC has also been feeding and supporting local communities through donations of one million pieces of chicken.  In the past 18 months, KFC has donated over three million pieces of chicken and partnered with notable non-profit organizations like Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers Big Sisters to feed frontline healthcare workers, students, teachers, and homebound seniors in need.

* KFC will donate to Blessings in a Backpack $1.00 for every sale of the KFC Chicken Sandwich, including KFC Chicken Sandwich meals, on November 30, 2021, with a minimum guaranteed donation of $250,000 and a maximum donation of $300,000.  For more information about Blessings in a Backpack, visit www.blessingsinabackpack.org.

The Taco Bell Foundation offers up to $7 million in scholarships to encourage students to pursue their passion, whatever that might look like
IRVINE, CA (StLouisRestaurantReview) Thursday, the Taco Bell Foundation announced the opening of its seventh annual Live Más Scholarship application period, offering up to $7 million in scholarships to ambitious students across the country, including more than $2 million specifically for Taco Bell team members hungry for the future.

This year, newly appointed Chief Impact Officer Lil Nas X is helping the Taco Bell Foundation launch the Live Más Scholarship application to enable students from all backgrounds to pursue their passions.  Having worked at an Atlanta area Taco Bell during his teenage years, Lil Nas X knows what it takes to unleash potential and ignite change in unconventional ways. Live Más Scholarship applicants are encouraged to channel their inner Lil Nas X in their application videos to show how their pursuit of higher education will empower them to make a meaningful impact.

"Taco Bell has a really special place in my heart – ever since I worked there, I've always been amazed at how they look out for their team members and fans," said Taco Bell's Chief Impact Officer Lil Nas X.  "I know there's a lot of young people like me out there who are taking non-traditional paths to follow their dreams, so I'm super excited to play a part in making sure more of them know Taco Bell has their back when it comes to achieving those goals."

Students ages 16-26 are encouraged to apply for the passion-based scholarship.  The application is non-traditional and only requires a two-minute video describing your passion, a positive change you want to make in the world, and how your education will help you achieve that goal.  The scholarship does not require students to submit grades, essays, or test scores, and the funds apply to multiple education paths, including community colleges and trade schools.  Winners join a community of passionate changemakers and gain access to real-world opportunities, professional connections, and a nationwide mentorship network.

The application period will close on January 11, 2022, and recipients will be announced in Spring 2022.  The awards are $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000 per student.  The Taco Bell Foundation will award over $2 million to Taco Bell team members who have been a part of the Taco Bell family for at least 30 continuous days.  The previous 90-day employment requirement was reduced to 30 to encourage scholarship applications among team members and incentivize prospective job candidates.  In addition to the scholarships reserved for team members, the Taco Bell Foundation will offer up to $5 million in new and renewal scholarships for students nationwide.

To raise money for the scholarship fund, the Taco Bell Foundation partners with Taco Bell restaurants to host National Fundraisers twice a year.  From November 11 - December 25, customers can round up their order total to the nearest dollar to support the Taco Bell Foundation in helping young people nationwide pursue their passions through the Live Más Scholarship.  Fans can also support by purchasing hats, t-shirts, pencils, and notebooks from Taco Bell Foundation Collection merchandise on the Taco Shop—all profit from the sale of these items will go towards scholarships, grants, and programming.

Founder: "Try as they may, they can't have Papa Johns without Papa John"
LOUISVILLE, KY (StLouisRestaurantReview) In response to the announcement from Papa John's International, Inc. (PZZA) that they are modifying the company's brand and store layout, founder and former Chairman and CEO Papa John Schnatter issued the following statement.

"Today, Papa John's announced several changes to the brand and store layout. While brands evolve over time to meet market demand, it's gratifying to see that most of the concepts we developed over 34 years – including high-quality ingredients, customer service, logo colors, slogans, and more – are still supporting the company's success. I am especially hopeful for the continued success of the franchisees, most of whom I know very well.

"My criticism of company management over the past three years has rested largely on their refusal to admit they were wrong about the false media narrative about me and my legacy, and their failure to maintain a commitment to the principles on which we built the company brand, including consistent product quality with every single pizza made.

"Considering the enduring association of Papa John with the brand, the company's change to the brand logo today is misplaced. Instead of being obsessed with Papa John and irrelevant changes to the brand logo, the company should become obsessed once again with making quality Papa John's pizza consistently. Try as they may, they can't have Papa Johns without Papa John."

KFC Says Ditch Long Drive-Thru Lines; Introduces New Quick Pick-Up Ordering
Use Quick Pick-Up to skip our drive-thru line and get KFC finger lickin' quick starting this holiday season
LOUISVILLE, KY (StLouisRestaurantReview) Drive-thru wait times are at an all-time industry high— increasing by nearly a minute across the industry since 2019.  To keep busy fried chicken lovers on schedule without keeping them from what they crave, Kentucky Fried Chicken is introducing Quick Pick-Up, the fastest way to get its world-famous fried chicken without waiting in line.

According to SeeLevel HX's annual Drive-Thru Study, drive-thru guests often have to wait in lines on average for six minutes and 22 seconds from the time they enter the line to when they drive off with their food.  With KFC's Quick Pick-Up, you can order ahead, park in a dedicated parking spot, grab your hot order, and go—saving you and your busy family some serious time!

We all know the story. It's 4:30 p.m., and the conversation starts, "what's for dinner?"  You try to pick up something quick, and the drive-thru line is wrapped around the building.  You try the next closest option, and the line is equally as long.  What should do you do next time? KFC Quick Pick-Up.

"Quick Pick-Up is changing the game by making fast food even more convenient and easy for busy customers," said Kevin Hochman, president, KFC U.S. "Santa may not be able to give you the gift of time this holiday season, but KFC can."

Now available at participating U.S. locations, guests can revel in the joys of Quick Pick-Up by placing their order and skipping the wait, freeing them up to actually enjoy more of the holidays with friends and family members.*
To avoid waiting in KFC's line:

- Place an order for Quick Pick-Up on the KFC app or KFC.com
- Head to your local KFC restaurant
- Park in a dedicated VIP parking spot, and
- Go inside where their order will be hot, ready, and waiting on KFC's new Quick Pick-Up shelf

Over the course of their lifetimes, Americans spend a collective total of 37 billion hours in line.  With KFC Quick Pick-Up, you can make at least one line (waiting for fried chicken that is) a thing of the past.

Give Quick Pick-Up a try on KFC.com or the KFC app. And for a limited time, now through December 27, get access to these limited offers on KFC.com and the KFC app:

- Get a free large order of our Secret Recipe Fries with a $5 purchase placed through the KFC app or KFC.com.**
- Feed the family with an eight-piece chicken and eight-piece tenders Fill Up, which includes eight pieces of KFC's Original Recipe or Extra Crispy™ fried chicken and eight Extra Crispy Chicken Tenders, a large coleslaw, four biscuits, and two large mashed potatoes and gravy.***

To introduce Quick Pick-Up, KFC has created a holiday-focused advertising campaign featuring frazzled families whose sanity is saved when they realize the convenience and speed of KFC's new Quick Pick-Up service.  Included in these campaign spots is a Quick Pick-Up-inspired jingle that reminds hungry fried chicken lovers about all the joyous activities they'll have time to experience when bypassing the line at KFC by using Quick Pick-Up.

*Quick Pick-up participation and lobby hours may vary.

** Offer valid with $5+ purchase (before taxes, tips & fees) only on the KFC app or kfc.com at participating KFC locations, while supplies last. Prices may vary. Must add eligible item to cart before completing order. Limit one per order. No cash value. Non-transferable.

***Prices and participation may vary.

Chipotle is also calling on its community of supporters to join the brand in supporting efforts to influence the 2023 Farm Bill with the goal of helping transition one million acres of farmland to the next generation of farmers
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (StLouisRestaurantReview) Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) yesterday unveiled a new film called "A Future Begins" created by Observatory, a sequel to Chipotle's award-winning 2011 film "Back to the Start" featuring Willie Nelson's cover of Coldplay's "The Scientist."  "A Future Begins" premieres new music from GRAMMY AWARD®-winning singer/songwriter Kacey Musgraves who reimagined Coldplay's "Fix You," as the score to the film.

Coldplay's 2005 classic "Fix You" reimagined by Kacey Musgraves is available to stream or buy on all digital platforms now: https://Kacey.lnk.to/fixyou.

At a time where Americans are coming together for the holidays, Chipotle has unveiled a new stop motion animation, based on the true story of a Chipotle farmer, that champions a family farm's remarkable revival.  The production begins by depicting a farming family sending their child off to college.  While the family battles to keep their farm intact, ultimately putting their land up for sale, the child struggles to discover his calling away at school.  After a moment passes where his true duty becomes clear, the child returns to save the family farm by introducing new technology and sustainable growing techniques, which are inspired by current Chipotle suppliers and partners.
The Bigger Picture
The emotionally charged, short film creatively shines a light on the enormous challenges facing the U.S. farming industry today.  Over the last five years, U.S. agriculture lost over 40 times more farmers than it gained*, challenging the future of small and midsized farms throughout the country.  Chipotle, which sources more local produce than any other national restaurant brand, is committed to Cultivating a Better World by sourcing meat that is raised without sub-therapeutic antibiotics and growth hormones and supporting farms that treat their animals humanely and prioritize environmentally friendly farming practices.

"I truly believe in supporting family-run businesses.  I come from a family of small business owners myself where I'm from down in Texas," said Musgraves.  "I know that the American farm has faced a huge range of challenges over the last decade that threaten its survival, and the future of farming depends on supporting that next generation of young farmers.  To be able to reimagine such a classic song while supporting an amazing cause with Chipotle really means a lot to me."

In addition to creating "A Future Begins," Chipotle is supporting farmers with the following initiatives.
Chipotle and the 2023 Farm Bill
The biggest barrier to entry for many aspiring young farmers is access to land.  In the last decade alone, the U.S. has lost more than 20 million acres of farmland, a trend that continues at an average rate of 2 million acres per year**.  As a response to this development, Chipotle is supporting the National Young Farmers Coalition and its movement to advocate for policy change in the 2023 Farm Bill that would facilitate equitable access to up to one million acres of land for the next generation of farmers.

To join the campaign and impact the 2023 Farm Bill, guests can visit www.chipotle.com/farmers.  Adding your name will help the National Young Farmers Coalition advocate for Congress to invest $2.5 billion toward securing access to up to one million acres for young farmers.

Through the brand's real change feature, guests can also support the National Young Farmers Coalition by rounding up their order total to the next highest dollar amount on the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com through the end of November.

This program is in addition to Chipotle's larger commitment of $5 million over the next five years to support the future of farming.  Chipotle is helping farmers under the age of 40 who meet its Food with Integrity standards secure long-term contracts.  In partnership with the National Young Farmers Coalition, the brand is also allocating money to fund an annual Seed Grant program, which will assist young farmers who are starting or building their farms.

"'Back to the Start' was an iconic moment in advertising almost a decade ago, serving as the brand's first-ever national TV ad," said Chris Brandt, Chief Marketing Officer at Chipotle.  "While Chipotle's values remain unchanged, the urgency behind our efforts to revitalize farming has only intensified.  'A Future Begins' opens the next chapter in our mission to make real change for the future of real food."
Carhartt Collaboration
To commemorate the premiere of "A Future Begins," Chipotle teamed up with Carhartt, America's premium workwear brand, for a pair of exclusive launches. The partnership highlights Chipotle and Carhartt's shared commitment to the future of farming.
Limited Edition Pieces
Chipotle and Carhartt will be dropping a handful of limited edition pieces, including a custom apron, jacket, hat, and a variety of patches highlighting Chipotle's mission to support the next generation of farmers.  The line is scheduled to drop on November 19 at 9 am PT/12 pm ET on chipotlegoods.com.  Profits from sales of these items will be donated to initiatives focused on supporting young farmers and making apparel and food more sustainable.
Shop the Look
Using some of its classic pieces, Carhartt has created four shoppable looks inspired by characters featured in "A Future Begins."  Fans can shop the looks now by visiting: www.carhartt.com/chipotle.

Restaurant Menus in 2022 Will Focus on Healthier Planet and Healthier Consumers
National Restaurant Association releases annual What's Hot survey revealing top menu trends for the year ahead
WASHINGTON, DC (StLouisRestaurantReview) Restaurant customers can expect to see health taking center stage on restaurant menus in 2022.  The National Restaurant Association today released its annual What's Hot Culinary Forecast, which offers a detailed look at the topics, trends, and products expected to drive restaurant menus in the coming year across a variety of categories including daypart occasions, menu categories, beverages, flavors, global inspirations, packaging/off-premises trends and industry macro-trends.

After demand for comfort food surged during the height of the pandemic, consumers are refocusing on better-for-you options, with foods that are believed to have immunity-boosting qualities and plant-based sandwiches making up three of the Top 10 Trends for 2022.  Plant-based proteins are growing increasingly popular on menus and less expensive cuts of protein, such as thighs instead of wings, will have a greater presence in the year to come.

Sustainability will continue to influence menus and how restaurants make decisions across the board.  From reusable and recyclable packaging to zero-waste options, restaurants are continuing to prioritize sustainable initiatives.  As consumers continue to utilize off-premises options in all dayparts, restaurants are looking to translate their dine-in experience outside the four walls of the restaurant with thoughtful packaging that maintains food quality, retains temperature, and is tamper-proof.

"In addition to a return to health-focused menu offerings and more eco-friendly, improved off-premises packaging, all of which rated high in the top trends, we're expecting operators to look across their menus for transformative opportunities," said Hudson Riehle, Senior Vice President of Research for the Association.  "Look for trends that fuse the traditional meal daypart items with other dayparts and an increasing popularity of snacking and its allied items.  Also, with the popularity of cocktails-to-go during the pandemic, restaurants will look to expand both alcoholic and non-alcoholic craft beverage options."

Menus will become more refined and streamlined going into the year ahead, while chefs anticipate alcohol-infused desserts, globally inspired items, and even upscale potato chips to find spots on the menu.

The What's Hot survey was conducted in October 2021. More than 350 professional chefs of the American Culinary Federation rated 109 food items and culinary concepts compiled by Association experts and Technomic's Menu Research & Insights Division.  Download the full report here.

St. Louis Restaurant Review launches a new video gallery featuring promotion videos, menu videos, and interviews.
ST LOUIS, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) St. Louis Restaurant Review is excited to announce the launch of its video gallery, complementing the existing picture gallery.  We will feature promotional videos, menu videos, and interviews with restaurant owners and select staff members.

Videos are an excellent marketing strategy for restaurants to promote their establishment, illustrate their featured menu items, and personalize their restaurant.  Consumers love videos, and the number of videos submitted to YouTube continues to grow daily.

Additionally, YouTube is the second largest search engine on the web.  Therefore, a good website will get a restaurant found in Google Search, and a good video will get them found in YouTube search and Google Search, expanding their online presence. Therefore, it is a critical marketing tool for effective digital marketing.
St. Louis Restaurant Review video services include:

- Submit existing video - monthly fee or a one-time lifetime fee
- Create a promo video - fee is based on objectives and size
- Create a menu video - price is based on goals and number of items

Thai Rama in Crystal City, Missouri, has been added to St. Louis Restaurant Directory.
CRYSTAL CITY, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) Thai Rama is located in Crystal City, Missouri, offering award-winning online customer reviews.  Online reviews at this level say a lot about the quality of a restaurant.  Consumers are demanding, and some are nasty about the comments in their reviews.  But when you see a restaurant with reviews at 4.5 and above, it is an excellent evaluation of the restaurant's operation.

Thai Rama has a 4.5 Star rating on Yelp, which is unusual.  Yelp is typically the lowest rating of restaurants among all major online review sources.

Our Featured Restaurant Owner is Andie, founder of Thai Kitchen - offering four locations across the St. Louis region.
ST LOUIS, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) Finding interesting restaurant owners is not a difficult job.  Most are creative, friendly, and exciting people to be around.  But sometimes the most attractive and worldly are hidden in the kitchen, not looking for fame or fortune, but more concerned about making great food that people love, which helps support staff and family members.

But what defines "interesting?"  Having unique ideas about decorating their restaurant or hiring people to cook the food they sell to the public when they can't cook it themselves?  Is that interesting?  Not to us!

Interesting to me might be a restaurant owner that moved to America knowing very little English with three kids and has opened 15 restaurants since 1997.  Her first restaurant was located in Bangkok, which she operated for five years before moving to the USA.

The founder moved to the USA in 1995 with the encouragement and support of her sizeable Thai family in America.  She opened her first US-based restaurant in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 1997.  She humbly recognizes that without the family's support, she could not have accomplished her overwhelming achievements.

Since opening her first restaurant in the US, she has opened multiple restaurants that have been sold.  Today, she is operating three restaurants known as "Thai Kitchen," located in the following communities:

- Florissant - Started April 2018 (Owned by Andies' brother and sister-in-law)
- O'Fallon - Started January 2013
- St. Charles - Started January 2019
- Wentzville - Started November 2020

This hidden gem is Sasimonthon Ongartsutthikul, but she goes by "Andie."  Andie loved to cook from an early age as her parents, with seven kids, divided the household chores, and she was chosen to cook.  She loved it then and still loves it today.  We visit her at a different restaurant each day, and she is always in the kitchen, cooking, teaching, or monitoring the cooking of her Thai family recipes, which are made from ingredients from Thailand.  The results are a dedicated customer base that loves her food and is not afraid to praise her Thai cuisines with highly rated online reviews on all platforms.

Most of the staff are family members, including Andie's mother, Kularb, a.k.a. Rose, who is 74 years old, standing by her family working each day to make their family recipe Thai dishes for their customers.

Andie visits Thailand each year and frequently finds new ideas to add to her menu.

Andie has the loving support of her three daughters, Pam, Nickie, and Katie.

We have not spent as much time with Andie as we want, but that will come in time.  She is creative, dedicated, and not afraid to work.  Disciplined, creative, and the desire to satisfy her customers will ensure that her restaurants attract award-winning online customer reviews, which in todays' technological-driven society, is the secret to success in business.

Restaurant Industry Provides White House Solutions to Impact Supply Chain Shortages and Delays
Washington, DC (StLouisRestaurantReview) The National Restaurant Association released the following statement on November 1, 2021:

Today the National Restaurant Association sent a letter to President Joseph R. Biden, highlighting how supply chain challenges and inflation are weighing down restaurant industry rebuilding and suggesting solutions that would have a long-term impact if implemented.

The letter highlights the current state of the industry and how the drop in consumer confidence brought on by the delta variant this summer halted the small gains restaurants made earlier this year.  At the same time, restaurants are facing massive supply shortages and delays while food costs are soaring.  This situation is increasing costs, restricting supply, and limiting the industry’s ability to function.  For example:

- 95% of restaurants have experienced significant supply delays or shortages of key food items in recent months, according to a recent national survey we conducted.
- 75% of restaurants have made menu changes because of supply chain challenges.
- Wholesale food prices increased sharply in September, posting the highest 12-month increase since 1980.
- Restaurant commodity prices are soaring, with beef up nearly 60%, fats and oils up 50%, and eggs up nearly 40%.
- Menu prices have risen 4.7% in the last 12 months alone.

The solutions provided would impact the supply chain across the economy, including:

- Facilitating impactful solutions to workforce challenges through comprehensive immigration reform and expanded employment opportunities.
- Addressing transportation and shipping constraints by allowing more young people to enter the trucking industry as drivers.
- Using trade and import capabilities, including removing burdensome tariffs on food and beverage products and equipment used in the supply chain.

“Faced with these very challenging times, our industry is doing its level best to protect employees and customers, while restaurants are struggling to keep their doors open,” said Sean Kennedy, executive vice president of Public Affairs for the National Restaurant Association.  “Taken together, these recommendations can work to help our nation’s restaurants that are being crippled as the pandemic rages on and supply chain challenges grow.”

Al-Bake Chicken & Burgers Closes, but there is possibly new owners coming
ST LOUIS, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) Al-Bake Chicken & Burgers closed November 1, 2021.  However, according to the owners, there might be a new owner coming to reopen the facility.  It is not known who or what type of restaurant will open.

Sadly, Al-Bake opened only a few months ago.  It is reasonable to think that the business environment and overwhelming challenges faced by the restaurant industry was a significant factor in the closing.

Since the pandemic's beginning, more than 12% of restaurants have closed nationwide, and that number will likely continue to increase.  For the restaurant that survived the pandemic, now they face inflation and supply chain issues, making it impossible for some small establishments to access certain supplies as they are being saved for the bigger customers of the product suppliers.

We will update the information about this location when it becomes available.

St. Louis Restaurant Review adds Ocha Thai & Japanese Cuisine to the St. Louis Restaurant Directory.
CHESTERFIELD, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) St. Louis Restaurant Review has added Ocha Thai & Japanese Cuisine to our St. Louis Restaurant Directory based on online customer reviews and length of time in business.  They are a verified listing.  Additionally, to help the restaurant promote themselves online, we added their menus for fast and easy reference.  Finally, we verified their Google My Business listing to enhance their online presence, which they lack a significant web presence.

Ocha is located approximately one mile east of the 141 and Olive Blvd intersection on Olive Blvd.  Unfortunately, the establishment is hard to view from the road because the buildings in front of the strip center block the view.

ST LOUIS, MO (StLouisRestaurantReview) Re-Voaked Sandwichs is located in the Central West End neighborhood.  Opening months before the lockdown created a challenge, and they survived.  However, now the supply chain problems have made it impossible to survive.

Small restaurants are dropping as staff shortages and supply chain issues create overwhelming challenges that small businesses can't overcome.  Unfortunately, this situation will get worse before it gets better.

The chain of events has created factors that have not been anticipated to plan for the political leaders.  They are too busy being political and not paying attention to the economy.

Our best recommendations for small locally-owned restaurants are:

- Know your numbers.  If you don't have real-time accounting, get it.  It is more important than ever to know your operating costs to price your food with inflation kicking in properly.
- Leverage technology for ordering and marketing.  Online ordering and delivery are more important than ever before.  In addition, technology can help decrease the need for a large staff, which is another major problem for restaurant owners.  Unfortunately, staffing shortages will continue for some time.

In summary, maximize your income with proper pricing, leverage technology to reduce the need for staff, and control your overhead.
